About Us - How it all
started
Our aim with
Tag-ie was to create an easy to use hand-held electronic animal
tag reader which a farmer would be able to use almost instinctively,
and for a reasonable price. Many systems we looked at were
exceedingly expensive, and far too complicated for our needs. We
decided that as a software and hardware design company with some 25
years experience, we should make our own.
We own a
flock of around 100 sheep, and this new technology has revolutionised
our flock management. We used to spend many hours in the barn
trying to scrape the dirt from an unwilling animal's ear tag in order to
read the number, and then trying to note that number on a soggy piece of
paper with a pen which had decided not to work! Now we bring the
sheep into the race, walk along the side of the race spending a couple
of seconds reading each tag with the reader, treat the animal as
necessary making a note on the keypad of the treatment given with a one
touch button, then its back inside for a cup of tea in the warm while
the reader uploads to the computer, and there we have a list of all
animals seen that day, with date and time and treatment given. We
have also incorporated an easy to understand flock record book within
the software which can be tailored to suit individual
needs, and includes the ability to store weight, scanning and lambing
data quickly and easily in the field too.
